COVID

The fight against COVID-19 has been a remarkable example of a proper adoption of good research data management practices. Data interoperability, one of the key data management principles identified by Wilkinson et al., allowed for the integration of data coming from different settings (laboratories, hospitals, industry, etc.) and samples (host, SARS-CoV-2, environment, etc.) and that has been pivotal for the development of the currently available therapies and vaccines.

In that sense, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), on behalf of the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union, together with the European Commission and the Portuguese Agency for Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation (AICIB), is organizing a workshop – Riding the Next Wave of Research Data – Leveraging the COVID-19 response to advance research data interoperability - to showcase and discuss what has been done at the national and European levels. The workshop will be a hybrid event taking place on Monday, June 7th from 9:30 to 15:30 WEST (Lisbon time).

BioData.pt | ELIXIR Portugal will be participating in Session 3: Challenges towards a more inclusive interoperability framework for scientific data (13:00 – 15:00 WEST) through our Executive Director and Deputy Head of Node, Ana Portugal Melo, and our Vice-President and Head of Node, Mário Gaspar da Silva, that will present Ready for BioData Management?, a unique national capacity-building programme for data management in life and health sciences that intends to accelerate the implementation of the FAIR principles by researchers that are part of the national scientific system.
